Virtual College to launch new Safe Use of Insulin Course at Patient Safety Congress

Virtual College’s first Safe Use of Insulin Course was created in response to an alert issued by the National Patient Safety Agency in June 2010. A series of high profile cases, including one death and one case of severe harm, had highlighted the danger of the incorrect use of insulin in treating diabetes and a need to promote patient safety.

Over 100,000 learners have now taken this online course so, when Virtual College was looking at how it could make improvements, it made sense to seek the advice and guidance of these experienced users.

They said that although they appreciated that training on the safe use of insulin was vital and mandatory, their time was at a premium. They only needed appropriate training for their job role and could not afford to spend their valuable time going through content which was irrelevant to them.

Some courses currently on the market force learners to go through a generic programme intended to cover a broad range of topics for a wide range of jobs. This was considered to waste valuable time ploughing through information of no use to them.

Virtual College’s new ‘Safe Use of Insulin’ course will be launched at the Patient Safety Congress & Awards being held at Manchester Central from 5-6 July.

Importantly, it allows learners to focus on just those elements which are important to them whether this is ‘prescribe’, ‘prepare’ and/or ‘administer’.

Virtual College’s Judith Clarkson, said: “We will be on the ‘Live Learning’ stage at 1.15 pm on Wednesday 6th July with Emer Corbett, Continuing Professional Development Nurse for the East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust, who will be talking about her practical experiences of training delivery. We look forward to launching the new course at this event.”

Tablet and iPad accessible, the new course has been created by subject experts who understand the full requirements of this mandatory training intimately.

It provides simple and easy tracking and reporting and has been designed by specialist illustrators and instructional designers to deliver an engaging and immersive online learning experience. CPD certified, it provides a certificate on successful completion.
