On-line training provides practical solution to Food Safety & Hygiene Training

Virtual College has launched an on-line Food Safety & Hygiene training module which aims to provide a practical, cost effective and problem-free solution to meeting current regulations.

Under food hygiene law in the UK, food handlers must receive adequate supervision, instruction and/or training in food hygiene for the work they do. This applies to all food businesses and the proprietor of each business is responsible for ensuring that their business complies with the law.

Before they start any work involving the handling of food, staff should receive induction training in the workplace to make them aware of food hygiene issues. Staff will also need further instruction suited to the type of work they do.

For a sector with a large number of temporary, seasonal and part-time workers, this can create significant, practical issues for businesses large and small:

  • For large organisations, staff training facilities may be required on site with the additional expense of employing training providers
  • For smaller businesses, there will be the costs of lost time and sending staff away on training courses
  • Records of successful training outcomes will need to be maintained to prove to officials that training has taken place.
  • In the event of a food safety and hygiene issue, documentary evidence may be required to prove that training has been undertaken to recognised standards

Extensive use is made of multimedia material to encourage learner engagement and information retention

Virtual College's on-line 'Food Safety & Hygiene training module addresses all of these challenges:

  • The on-line learning resources can be purchased and accessed instantly by logging on to www.virtual-college.co.uk
  • Learners have the flexibility of studying at a time, place and pace which suits the business and the learner - all that is required is access to the Internet
  • As all of the study resources are on-line, there is no need to meet the cost of trainers or lose staff time travelling to external training venues
  • Documentary evidence of successful training outcomes is provided to prove that training has been undertaken to recognised standards
The training material is accredited with the Royal Institute of Public Health and, on completion, trainees can sit the online test. If they pass, they receive a Foundation Certificate in Basic Food Hygiene. Certificates are issued within 10 working days of successful completion.

The training module makes extensive use of multimedia material to engage the learner and includes quizzes and test material to aid learning retention.

At only £42.50 including VAT and certificate cost, this is an effective and economical way of for companies involved in food handling to ensure they meet their legal requirements.
