Overview - CAST - Compressed Air System Technology

This e-learning module has been created by the Virtual College, in partnership with the British Compressed Air Society (BCAS). The course has been written by experts in the industry and is accredited by British Compressed Air Society (BCAS) the UK trade association for suppliers and users of compressed air products and services, and has been developed in partnership with Virtual College as an e-learning course. Successful candidates are awarded a VC certificate.

Compressed air is an essential source of power for business and industry, and its generation accounts for at least 10% of industrial electricity. The Certificate in Compressed Air System Technology (CAST) provides a comprehensive introduction to the main principles of compressed air systems. It has been developed by BCAS in partnership with Virtual College as a unique qualification to meet the needs of employers for compressed air training.

Each module includes learning activities supported by Flash animated graphics and interactive challenges. There is an online multi-choice assessment on completion of each module.

Lesson Plan

The course comprises 10 modules, to provide a comprehensive introduction to the main principles and uses of modern compressed air systems, thereby contributing to improved safety in the workplace.

  1. Science and properties of air - Basic concepts of how air behaves depending on its pressure, volume and temperature including a basic understanding of Thermodynamics
  2. Applications of compressed air - Where and why compressed air is used, an overview of the energy sources from which it is produced
  3. Compressed air systems - Overview of the key components within a system and what each component does
  4. Air compressors - An overview of the different technologies and what each type of compressor is used for
  5. Control systems - How the supply of compressed air can be matched to the needs of the users
  6. Air treatment - Cleaning and drying the air to the required standard
  7. Storage and distribution of compressed air - Storing air in a system and distributing it to where it is needed by the user
  8. Maintenance of compressed air systems - The importance of good maintenance to keep systems running safely and at their most efficient, including air hose safety
  9. Health, safety and environment - Overview of health and safety legislation affecting compressed air systems, and the effect of compressed air use on the wider environment
  10. Compressed air in action - Real examples of compressed air in use
