Overview - Problem Solving

This course looks at a variety of tools to help individuals and teams solve both simple and highly complex problems. Some of the tools are used in healthcare, while others are new to the field. Every problem is different and may require one or a mixture of tools to solve.

The aim of the module is to increase understanding of problem statements, problem solving and to gain an appreciation of error proofing.

Having completed this module, the learner will:

  • Know how to create a problem statement
  • Be able to use different problem solving techniques
  • Understand root cause analysis
  • Understand error proofing theory
  • Understand Failure Mode Effects Analysis (FMEA)

Lesson Plan

  • Brief introduction to Lean principles
  • Problem statements - overviews of the problem
  • 5 Whys - a questioning technique aimed at determining what was wrong
  • Brainstorming - generating a large number of ideas for the solutions to a problem
  • Fishbone diagrams - cause and effect diagrams
  • Root cause analysis – identify the main cause of a problem
  • Error proofing – identifying and rectifying problems or errors
  • Failure mode effects analysis (FMEA) and summary

Accreditation

The content of this course has been independently certified as conforming to universally accepted Continuous Professional Development (CPD) guidelines

Certification

On completion of this course you will be able to download a Virtual College certificate.

Duration

Approximately 3 - 4 hours. The length of time taken depends entirely on how quickly you can study and absorb the material. You can proceed as quickly or slowly as you like, and there is no limit on how long you can take to do the course.

Target Audience

Although this module uses examples and scenarios from a Health and Social Care setting, it is equally useful to anyone outside of this sector wishing to have a better understanding of problem statements and problem solving, and gain an appreciation of error proofing.
