There are lots of different people in various work places where disabled children and young people could have a short break, for example, librarians, sport staff, scout/guide leaders, and play workers. It is important that all those involved have the knowledge and skills required to provide the appropriate support and help ensure that a high quality experience is had by parents, carers, and children.

As a result, this e-learning module has been designed to provide the learner with an increased understanding of the role of the short break worker including the tasks and responsibilities involved when providing support for disabled children enjoying a short break.

On completion of this course learners will be able to:

• Recognise the importance of developing your disability awareness
• Recognise the skills required to support disabled children experiencing a short break
• Recognise what might be required to keep different disabled children and young people safe and healthy
• Recognise the value of effective communication in its broadest terms
