Description

Overview

This course begins with a look at skin, its characteristics and functions and some statistics.

Pressure ulcers, bedsores and pressure sores are described in detail, including symptoms, risk factors, where they occur and how to treat them, including the changing of dressings and monitoring the progress and effectiveness of the treatment. Case studies are provided as examples of symptoms, factors and risks.

An analysis is provided of equipment and materials and how they work to prevent and cure pressure ulcers. Risk assessment tools are explored including the Braden Scale, which uses six sub-scales to determine the risk of developing a pressure ulcer and the Waterlow Scale which uses nine factors to determine risk.

Finally, the Norton Scale uses five factors to determine risk. The five step process (SSKIN) is described for prevention and treatment of pressure sores.
