Prevent Radicalisation and Extremism FAQs

  • What are the 4 stages of the radicalisation process?

The Action Counters Terrorism organisation outlined the four stages those going through the radicalisation process are likely to experience:

    • Pre-Radical - this is a very early stage and it is likely the individual will not have been exposed to any extremist content but they will be aware of extremism groups and start to identify with some of their beliefs
    • Self-Identify - in the second stage the individual is likely to have begun accepting the belifs of the group or individual that is radicalising them
    • Indoctrination - the penultimate stage of the radicalisation process is where the individual is groomed by an extremist organisation or individual and their beliefs in extremist views become stronger as they head down the path towards terrorism
    • Terrorism - the final stage of the process is where the individual starts carrying our terrorist acts or is involved is acts of terrorism
  • What are the 3 signs of radicalisation?

Professionals and those responsible for children and vulnerable adults need to be aware of the common signs of radicalisation and these include:

    • An individual starts to isolate themselves from their friends and/or family and becomes increasingly withdrawn
    • Individuals can also become very secretive about who they are spending their time with or talking to online
    • Another common sign is the individual becoming very outspoken and aggressive in their beliefs and opinions
  • What does extremism mean in safeguarding?

Extremism means when a child, young person or adult becomes vocal or provides active opposition to the fundamental values of being a British citizen.

These fundamental values include individual liberty, democracy, the rule of law and mutual respect and tolerance of different faiths and beliefs.
