Prosecuted restaurateur lies about food hygiene test

schedule 15th August 2011 by Virtual College in Food and Drink

A restaurant owner in Loughton who was ordered to take a food hygiene course was prosecuted after it was revealed he lied about his results and failed to improve his premises.

Following environmental inspections in August and September last year of Mr Syed Tahmin Muhith's Eye 2 Indian Restaurant on Loughton's High Road, the property was found to have fundamental lapses in basic food safety standards. As such, Mr Muhith was ordered to attend a food hygiene training course and clean up his business, reports the Epping Forest Guardian.

However, not only did he fail to improve the conditions, he lied about passing the exam and then established a new food business following the liquidation of Eye 2 India without telling the local authorities.

Mr Muhith was given a two-year conditional discharge and ordered to pay £1,500 in court costs.

The latest prosecution arguably underscores the fact that while basic health and hygiene certificates are increasingly available to the general public through further education or online learning courses, lapses can still continue.

Meanwhile, South Buckinghamshire District Council has become the latest out of nearly 160 local councils to join the Food Standard Authority's Food Hygiene Rating Scheme, which aims to monitor businesses' compliance with environmental laws.
