Online learning courses could benefit the long-term unemployed

schedule 6 years, 4 months by Virtual College in Virtual College

The government should give unemployed people the chance to boost their skills-set in order to help them get a job.

This is the view of Phil Flaxton, chief executive officer at Work Wise UK, who said it is "very difficult" for those who have not worked for a long time to gain employment.

He suggested individuals should have the opportunity to learn new skills, which could be achieved through online learning courses or E-learning schemes.

Mr Flaxton explained a national awareness campaign is required in which organisations sign up to help provide support and training to those who have been out of employment for a long time.

"If you have been out of work for two or three years, then the chances are, technology has moved on, the chances are that you may not be as skilled as you were when you became unemployed," he added.

According to the Trades Union Congress, just under 250,000 people have been on the dole for more than 12 months.
