Graduates 'prefer social media and marketing roles'

schedule 24th May 2011 by Virtual College in Virtual College

Individuals who have taken higher education and e-learning courses are shying away from entry into the IT sector at present, it has been revealed.

James Toovey, founder and director of Langley James, said graduate roles in social media and marketing are gaining preference over IT, which was once one of the most popular career choices for individuals across the UK. He commented: "I feel lots of graduates that would have been getting into IT ten years ago are looking at getting into gaming or marketing, particularly social networking. IT is not perceived as dynamic as it once was."

According to the latest UK Graduate Career Survey from High Fliers, 3.9 per cent of final year students will apply for positions in the IT market this year. This is up from 3.5 per cent last year, but down significantly from ten years ago, when one in ten graduates would consider IT as a career.
