RNCM uses e-learning to help staff with new software

The Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) decided online learning was the best way to help employees get to grips with the latest version of Microsoft Office 2010.

According to PublicTechnology.net, the Manchester-based institution used a visual training resource to aid the transition to the new software package, which will replace Office 2003 on its computers.

The college opted for an on-demand video service that users can rewind and replay as many times as they wish using a PC, laptop or mobile device with access to the internet.

Dave Long, head of IT at the RNCM, said the college could not afford to run a series of conventional training courses for all academic and support staff.

"The transition from Microsoft Office 2003 to Office 2010 is not technically difficult," he told the publication.

"But from a user's point of view, the new version has a completely different look and feel to it."

Earlier this month, consultancy firm IT Governance announced the launch of a new e-learning course designed to equip workers with knowledge of the Data Protection Act.
