Safeguarding Children Best Practice Sharing Event Manchester

schedule 14th October 2011 by Virtual College in Virtual College Last updated on 7th July 2016

Last week saw the Safeguarding Children e-academy hold a successful best practice sharing event in Manchester; raising awareness of the impact cultural and religious differences can make on safeguarding. The all-day event was attended by over 80 industry professionals from across the North West, and included sessions on difficult subjects such as forced marriage, spirit possession & witchcraft and female genital mutilation (FGM).

Lucy Torrington of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office's Forced Marriage Unit kicked off the day with a fascinating insight into the varied cultural, economic and social factors involved in forced marriage, also discussing the ways in which the Forced Marriage Unit can intervene to help prevent or rescue victims from such arrangements.

Perdeep Kaur Gill, an independent safeguarding advisor, talked about how different belief systems can impact the way in which families raise their children and in particular react to perceived ill-discipline and mental health issues. She also outlined ways to approach these difficult and sensitive issues without causing offense.

Finally, Comfort Momoh MBE, a FGM/Public Health Specialist form St Guys & Thomas's Hospital, London, gave a moving and at times difficult to watch session on female genital mutilation and her work to support victims in the UK.

For a more detailed account of the day, including a video montage, you can visit the Safeguarding Children e-academy website

The next free safeguarding event is to be held on 17th November 2011 in Peterborough and is intended to highlight the difficulties of working with Working with Resistant, Hostile or Uncooperative Families. If you would like to attend, or find out more about this event, please contact Hazel Sedgwick on 01943 830533 or email
