E-learning training course to hit Ethiopia

schedule 27th June 2012 by Virtual College in Virtual College

Ethiopia is to benefit from online learning, following a collaboration between the Worcester College of Technology and registered charity Computer Aid. The e-learning training course is centred in four universities in the African nation and should benefit 50 lecturers and personnel in the facilities' information technology departments. It is hosted by the Tigray District's Merkelle University, with participants also coming from Jimma, Samara and Aksum academic institutions. Computer Aid has been working with Merkell for many years and has helped the facility improve its computer provisions and resources, which influenced its decision to make the university a leading partner. Merkell aims to have 75 per cent of its courses available through virtual learning environments by 2016 and the charity argues its training comes at the "perfect time" to expose many of the institution's staff to online learning. The skills-building course Computer Aid is providing should enable personnel to understand how to use e-learning tools. Participants will be taught how to set up a course for distance learning online, establishing instructor accounts and developing their own courses. "Mekelle has great provisions for developing its e-learning program," Worcester College of Technology information and learning technology director and training facility for the Ethiopia-based initiative Peter Kilcoyne declared. "I am very confident that following on from this course they will develop some excellent online learning provisions," he added. "Access to higher education in Africa is much more difficult for the average person than in the UK. Development of e-learning is making it possible for many people across Africa to engage in educational opportunities that previously would have been impossible," the specialist had previously noted. Worcester College of Technology has also worked with Computer Aid in other courses to establish e-learning in Africa, including an initiative that saw the educational centre providing training to 80 lecturers in six Nigerian universities.
