The Safe Management of Sepsis course: A free and life-saving resource

Sepsis e-Learning Course

Sepsis can be life-threatening if not spotted early by healthcare workers, with 44,000 lives lost each year in the UK to the bacterial condition.

The illness costs the NHS around £2.5 billion per year, so it is vital that all nurses, doctors and other healthcare staff are trained in how to spot symptoms; sepsis can lead to shock, multiple organ failure and death if not recognised and treated early.

In 2016, Virtual College worked with the UK Sepsis Trust to develop a free online training course titled The Safe Management of Sepsis, which has the potential to help save lives.

Why sepsis is so difficult to spot

Sepsis can be caused by a large number of different bugs, many of which we come into contact with every day without getting ill. But sometimes, the immune system responds abnormally and causes sepsis.

Sepsis can manifest itself as a secondary infection following septicaemia, bacterial meningitis or other viral infections, making a patient seriously ill and putting their life at risk.

However, the symptoms of sepsis can be similar to other illnesses, meaning it can be difficult to diagnose. But delays in diagnosis can endanger a patient's life. This is why our The Safe Management of Sepsis course was developed - to make sure all cases of sepsis blood poisoning are spotted and treated promptly.

About Virtual College's The Safe Management of Sepsis course

Virtual College's The Safe Management of Sepsis e-learning course provides an in-depth, comprehensive guide to identifying and treating sepsis in accordance with NHS guidelines (the health service's 'Sepsis: recognition, diagnosis and early management' guidelines were published in October 2016).

Speaking at the time of the course's launch, founder of the UK Sepsis Trust and chief executive of the Global Sepsis Alliance Dr Ron Daniels said: “Our team seeks to save lives and improve outcomes for survivors of sepsis by instigating political change, educating healthcare professionals, raising public awareness and providing support for those affected by this devastating condition.

"These high quality resources reflect recent changes in national and international guidance and will equip health professionals with the knowledge to deliver excellence in sepsis care.”

Judith Clarkson, director of Virtual College, added: "Working closely with the UK Sepsis Trust, we are now aware that early intervention saves lives, and can reduce the length of hospital stay and need for critical care admission.

“It is so important that we wanted to make this online learning available as soon as possible after the new NHS guidelines were published.” Find out more about Virtual College's The Safe Management of Sepsis course here.
