Redefining safeguarding with a tailored methodology
Virtual College has been an established safeguarding training provider for over 10 years, delivering safeguarding and child protection training to more than one million people. In that time we’ve worked with organisations across the UK and internationally to help them enhance their safeguarding training provision, as well as measure its effectiveness.
Besides offering a wide range of safeguarding e-learning courses, we specialise in creating tailored safeguarding programmes that meet unique needs. We understand that the best results are delivered when the whole training experience is easily accessible, engaging and memorable; and one in which people feel empowered to make a difference in the future.
Creating bespoke safeguarding training
In 2014 the Home Office reviewed the national guidelines on responding to female genital mutilation (FGM). As a result, they found that there was a lack of accessible training on FGM and, consequently, frontline safeguarding professionals had significantly different levels of knowledge surrounding the practice.
To address this problem, Virtual College worked with the Home Office to develop a bespoke e-learning course that, whilst handling the subject in a sensitive way, gave the learners clear information about identifying and responding to FGM practices. Over 128,000 people have now taken the online training.
Helping with safeguarding audits
Somerset Safeguarding Children Board (SCB) were using a paper-based system to complete the Section 175 audit as required by the Education Act 2002. They found it hard to generate meaningful reports as responses were made in varying formats and received at many different times.
Virtual College worked with Somerset SCB to help them implement training software that included an online auditing tool. This has made the whole process quicker, easier to manage and more effective to report on.
Taking a consultative approach
The Children’s Society is a national charity providing an extensive network of frontline services, delivered by its own staff and supported by an army of volunteers. Delivering safeguarding training to this large, diverse group of workers was a significant challenge, especially when it came to tracking completion and compliance.
Virtual College began working with The Children’s Society in 2016, helping them to roll out a learning management system. The system was used to give 2,000 safeguarding training courses to staff and volunteers in the first 10 months.
Virtual College’s passion for the project and their understanding for the sensitivity of the subject…meant that the end product was innovative and tailored to the needs of the learners.
It is now easy to track progress, police completions and challenge responses so that we can focus on support and continuous improvement.
Our new starters can do all of their mandatory training straight away so we know they will have covered all of the compliance topics in the first week.
Popular safeguarding courses
