Overview - The Assessment and Management of Urinary Incontinence and Bladder Dysfunction in Adults
Urinary incontinence and bladder dysfunction is common among people of all ages, affecting about one in eight men and one in four women. This equates to approximately three to six million people in the UK. It can have numerous social and physical impacts which can be very damaging to sufferers, and is often viewed as a ‘hidden’ issue due to the embarrassment it can cause.
However, healthcare workers can make a huge difference to people’s lives, often simply by increasing patient awareness and discussing ways in which they can take control of their lives again.
As a result, this module aims to increase awareness of the main issues around bladder incontinence and provide the learner with the information needed to undertake a holistic assessment of individuals with urinary incontinence and bladder dysfunction, and initiate appropriate treatment.
On completion of this course learners will:
- Identify the main causes of urinary incontinence, and the impact on the individuals
- Outline the roles of anatomy and physiology in relation to continence
- Recognise the specific health conditions which may have an impact on bladder function
- Explain the different classifications and types of bladder dysfunction
- Define and describe them key principles of a continence assessment and treatment options

This module is targeted primarily at healthcare workers in NHS organisations who will be required to undertake assessments of individuals with urinary incontinence and bladder dysfunction. However, the information within the module would provide a useful overview of the subject to anyone working in the healthcare sector in general.
