The "Becoming a Champion" course has been instrumental to IHG's understanding of where and how our food is turning into waste. It has really helped us to engage our teams on the value of food and reducing the impact of our food, and contributed to our net zero ambitions - protecting our profits, business and the planet.

Once WRAP discovered that over 1 million tonnes of food were wasted each year in the hospitality sector, they wanted to help tackle the problem. After initially launching a food waste reduction campaign called ‘Guardians of Grub’, they realised it wasn’t quite enough. The necessary behaviour change wasn’t there.
To give the campaign a boost, they wanted a digital training programme that would provide a learner-focused programme that would bring all the resources together in a comprehensive way and increase the essential skills needed to drive that much sought-after behaviour change.

The company had tight budgets but big ideas. There was a vast library of resources available but no innovative way to bring them all together in a helpful way for the learner to access and understand. There was a clear need for a simple, learner-friendly way to manage and capture the important food waste data.

Virtual College played a key role in instrumental advisory research groups, mapping content by assessing existing materials and identifying gaps. We curated and created content by building, buying, and borrowing resources as needed. Additionally, we developed podcasts, designed templates, and carried out a significant portion of graphic design work.
We supported learner uploads through our Training Platform and provided essential audit tools to capture and illustrate food waste data effectively.
The final solution in this particular case was an online blended programme. This learning programme included a self assessment so that learners could judge what they needed from the training themselves. It combined different types of learning to ensure the best digital resources were used for the job, from e-Learning to podcasts and videos. Microsoft Teams face-to-face sessions were also included to allow learners to discuss, share ideas and meet industry experts. All in all the ultimate aim and result to build a network of 'Champions' for the business.
The participant surgery sessions have been so useful. The first one really got me going on my journey.
