Burnley school criticised for poor food hygiene

schedule 6 years, 4 months, 1 week by Virtual College in Food Hygiene

Parents concerned with the quality of food hygiene delivered to their children could be disappointed with an incident at a Burnley school.

According to the Lancashire Telegraph, kitchen staff at Whittlefield Primary School were awarded one star out of a possible five for the cleanliness of the establishment.

Inspectors visited the institution in February as part of the Food Standards Agency's (FSA's) latest campaign to highlight the importance of hygiene across food businesses.

With the primary school falling into Burnley's bottom three per cent for performance, councillors have called for a drastic improvement to conditions at the school.

Charlie Briggs, from Burnley Borough Council, said: "The inspection appears to have come too early for the school.

"I have been assured by the headmistress that initial problems have been tackled and a major refurbishment is planned for the kitchens."

The inspection, which took place in February, is part of a wider campaign by the FSA to make significant improvements to the hygiene standards across the country.

Members of the public are able to consult food standards ratings for establishments in their area on the websites of most local councils.
