A judgement from the High Court along with a judicial review means many food businesses will have to reapply for approval to operate in accordance with food safety standards.
Businesses which have changed their appointed food business operator, meaning those which have had different owners between now and January 2006, will be affected.
The Food Standards Authority (FSA) revealed it was contacting businesses on Friday (August 26th) to advise whether the judgement would apply to them.
However, assessments of applications will not begin until at least January 31st, according to the FSA, so as to allow time for what could be a potentially huge volume of new applications arriving at its door.
Meanwhile, a Cornish chef has received a gold-level food safety award for his kitchen standards and healthy menu offerings at The Gurnard's Head eatery and boutique hotel in Cornwall.
Martin Holland, Cornwall Council's commercial food and safety officer, claimed the certificate was the "most prestigious award we give and reflects extremely high standards in food safety and hygiene".
