Glasgow food hygiene database of businesses goes live

Yesterday (August 29th) saw the launch of a database listing the food safety ratings of all Glasgow's food businesses.

Developed in conjunction with the Food Standards Agency, Glasgow City Council hopes the scheme will prove popular by allowing its citizens to become more aware of basic health and hygiene standards in their favourite eateries, the Evening Times reports.

Around 5,500 premises are listed in total on the site, which has been launched following calls by health professionals, politicians and members of the public for greater access to relevant food hygiene information following the hospitalisation of seven people after an E.coli outbreak near Cardiff earlier this month.

Sarah Daniels, a chartered health practitioner and co-founder of health and safety consultancy Redcat.gb.com, previously echoed similar calls.

"It should be compulsory for businesses to display their score or rating and perhaps a copy of the inspection report," she said.

Ms Daniels added that public awareness gives clarity and transparency, and allows the customer to make more informed decisions.
