Virtual College has partnered with Ilkley BID to provide more than 300 local businesses with free access to over 50 online training courses, helping employers develop their teams, meet compliance requirements and reduce training costs.
Finding affordable, flexible and high-quality online training for businesses can be challenging, particularly for small and independent employers. That’s why Virtual College is working with Ilkley Business Improvement District (BID) to give local businesses access to a wide range of free online courses.
The partnership provides every member of staff across more than 300 levy-paying Ilkley BID businesses with unlimited access to Virtual College’s online training library.
From food safety and health and safety training to GDPR, leadership and professional development, the programme gives Ilkley businesses a flexible way to invest in their employees without the cost and administration often associated with external training providers.
Through the partnership, businesses can access more than 50 online training courses covering some of the most important skills and compliance requirements for today’s workplaces.
The training library includes:
The range of subjects means businesses can use the training to support both mandatory and development-focused learning, from helping new employees understand essential workplace requirements to developing the skills of existing managers and teams.
One of the key benefits of online training is flexibility.
Employees can access their courses online and complete their learning around their existing responsibilities, rather than having to attend a scheduled classroom session or take significant time away from the workplace.
For employers, this can make it easier to provide consistent training across their workforce while reducing the administration involved in organising individual training courses.
Access to the Ilkley BID training programme is designed to be straightforward. Businesses can register through a dedicated page on the Ilkley BID website, with employees able to start their training on the same day.
On successful completion, learners receive a CPD-accredited certificate, providing a record of their achievement and continuing professional development.
Training is an important investment for businesses, but the cost of providing learning opportunities across an entire workforce can quickly add up.
This is particularly relevant for smaller businesses, where training budgets and staff time can be limited.
By making Virtual College’s online training library available to all staff at participating Ilkley BID businesses at no cost, the partnership gives local employers an opportunity to access training that they may otherwise need to purchase from external providers.
It also means businesses can provide learning opportunities across their workforce rather than restricting training to a small number of employees.
For employees, the programme provides an accessible way to develop new skills and build knowledge that can support their current role and future career development.
The partnership is particularly meaningful for Virtual College because Ilkley is where the organisation began.
Jamie Ashforth, Director of Business and Strategy at Virtual College, said:
“Ilkley is where we started, so supporting the businesses on our own high street has always mattered to us beyond the usual customer relationship.
“The pressures on small businesses haven’t gone away, they’ve just changed shape. Every levy-paying business in Ilkley, whatever its size, can give its staff access to the same quality of compliance and development training as a large national employer, without the cost or the admin. We’re glad to keep that door open for the town.”
The partnership reflects Virtual College’s long-standing focus on making high-quality digital learning accessible to individuals and organisations.
Online learning can help remove some of the traditional barriers to workplace training, giving employees the flexibility to learn at a time and place that works for them.

The initiative also provides an additional benefit for businesses that are part of Ilkley BID.
Sarah Brookfield-Almond, BID Manager for Ilkley, said:
“Ilkley BID are pleased to work with Virtual College to offer a really wide range of easily accessible training courses to our members. In these economically challenging times, enhancing the benefits of BID membership in this way will save our members money, and time.
“We are always looking for ways to help and support our local businesses, and through this initiative we are pleased to be able to deliver on this objective.”
Providing access to free business training courses gives BID members another practical resource to support their employees, while helping businesses make the most of their membership.
The Ilkley BID partnership demonstrates how online training can help local business communities make professional development and compliance training more accessible.
With more than 50 courses available, businesses can use the Virtual College training library to support a variety of learning needs across their teams.
Whether an employee needs to complete essential health and safety training, develop their understanding of GDPR, improve their food hygiene knowledge or build leadership skills, the programme provides a flexible route to learning.
Virtual College is keen to work with Business Improvement Districts across the UK to explore how online learning can provide greater value to member businesses.
By giving local employers access to high-quality training, BID partnerships can help businesses reduce training costs, develop their people and create better-supported business communities.
The partnership with Ilkley BID is an example of how making online training more accessible can benefit employers and employees alike.
