Online learning pupils may benefit from new grading structure

E-learning students could achieve an 'A* with distinction' grade in a maths exam accredited by Ofqual and one source has suggested this change could provide meaningful results.

While previously pupils could receive a maximum mark of A*, the AQA Level 2 Certificate in Further Maths iGCSE allows for entrants to go one step further.

Responding to the news, secretary for the Campaign for Real Education Nick Seaton claimed the alteration is a positive step.

He said: "Something that differentiates [between] those who do extremely well and those who just do well can only be a good thing."

However, Mr Seaton warned that examiners must be careful not to reduce the number of marks required for an A* to make room for the new grade.

In his view, online learning and conventional pupils should not be affected, but it is something to watch out for.

The education expert went on to praise iGCSEs, saying they offer better preparation for A Levels.
