This week we've added another vital training course to our portfolio with the release of The Bribery Act 2010. As of July 1st this year (2011) when the act came into force, businesses are responsible for ensuring adequate measures are put into place to avoid the use of bribery from its employees.
This means that even as an MD or CEO, if one of your staff is caught partaking in bribery they could face a prison term, and you could be held responsible for your companies mal-practice. On the surface, the idea of bribery seems quite clear cut and is defined by the Ministry of Justice saying: "Very generally bribery is defined as giving someone a financial or other advantage to encourage that person to perform their functions or activities improperly or to reward that person for having already done so." www.justice.gov.uk/guidance/docs/bribery-act-2010-guidance.pdf (Reproduced under the terms of the Click-Use Licence.) A screen from our Bribery Act training module We've all seen movies where the corrupt detective or lawyer can be bought off with a brown envelope or cheeky switched briefcase stuffed with crisp notes, but the reality is that many instances of bribery can take place without the receiver (or giver) even realising they are committing a crime, making good staff training on the issue essential.
For example, the subject of corporate hospitality is covered in our new e-learning module and helps your workers to understand what is considered acceptable practice for receiving gifts. This could be 'spare' tickets to a football match, a meal out on behalf of the buyers company or even a simple token of appreciation like a bottle of wine sent out at Christmas.
