Virtual College’s Understanding Pathways to Extremism and the Prevent Programme

Virtual College is extremely proud that one of our e-learning courses, Understanding Pathways to Extremism and the Prevent Programme, has been highlighted in the Home Office's Prevent Training catalogue.

Our Understanding Pathways to Extremism and the Prevent Programme online course is designed to educate learners about how people may become vulnerable to radicalisation and also covers the Prevent Duty responsibilities, as outlined in Section 26 of the Counter-Terrorism and Security Act 2015.

Prevent Training

The employers of safeguarding professionals who are subject to the Prevent duty need to ensure they have undergone appropriate training as part of the governments Prevent programme, which our course can assist you with.

We have worked alongside subject matter experts and safeguarding boards to ensure the difficult, and often emotive, subject of radicalisation is handled sensitively throughout the e-learning module.

The Home Office's Prevent Duty guidance states that frontline staff who engage with the public should:

• Understand what radicalisation means and why people may be vulnerable to being drawn into terrorism as a consequence of it
• Be aware of what we mean by the term 'extremism' and the relationship between extremism and terrorism
• Know what measures are available to prevent people from becoming drawn into terrorism and how to challenge the extremist ideology that can be associated with it
• Understand how to obtain support for people who may be being exploited by radicalising influences

Training outcomes

After completing the course, learners will:

• Understand what extremism and radicalisation are and why it's important to discuss and address these issues.
• Have knowledge of the Prevent strand of the government’s CONTEST strategy.
• Better understand what makes people vulnerable to radicalisation.
• Know how to recognise signs that radicalisation might be taking place and have a clear understanding of their responsibilities in preventing it.

E-learning: An engaging way to gain awareness of radicalisation

Radicalisation awareness training can be challenging, but e-learning provides an engaging and immersive platform to deliver the information as part of your Prevent strategy training.

The course comprises video, audio, reflective practice, case studies and real-world scenarios for a rounded, effective learning experience. Learners are also periodically asked questions on what they have learnt to make sure the course content has been understood.
