Mission to Seafarers : Supporting mental health and wellbeing with digital training

Mission to Seafarers is a registered charity who offer practical, emotional and spiritual support to the 1.5 million seafarers who work at sea. With financial worries, mental health issues, loneliness and dangerous conditions to contend with, the support Mission to Seafarers offers is valuable to the safeguarding of the seafarers’ mental health and wellbeing.

The Aim

To reach their far-flung, global audience and offer support, knowledge and insights that truly makes a difference to their mental health and wellbeing. 

With 15 face-to-face sessions held in 2019 to 6,000 learners, Mission to Seafarers knew there had to be a way to reach even more of their 1.5 million seafarers. But it wasn’t just about the numbers they were after, they had to make sure that the new approach handled the topics – financial worries and social communication – with the sensitivity that they required. 

They turned to us to see if digital learning could help.

The Challenges

  • Limited and low bandwidth internet access on the vessels
  • Had to reach a large and globally diverse audience
  • Find a way to carefully handle the sensitive topics and ensure the learners felt supported, understood and motivated to make changes

How we helped

  • Developed a bespoke design
  • Carried out workshops to determine the success and aim of the courses
  • Offered a full bespoke solution – scoping, graphical design, human-centred learning design, development, project management, and testing
  • The design and content ensured the learner felt supported, such as a ‘safe space’ and a narrative arc they could relate to

The final result included:

  • 2 e-learning modules – Financial Wellbeing and Social Wellbeing
  • Animations, challenges activities and practical downloadable resources
  • Graphical, animated approach to support the sensitive topics
  • Content that was interactive, engaging and relevant
  • Easily accessible and stable over the ships’ internet
