Online learning courses 'can fit in around careers'

Professionals considering embarking on distance learning courses may be interested to hear that one student who did just that said she was able to study while maintaining her lifestyle, job and car.

Speaking to the Daily Telegraph, Sandy Briden - who enrolled with the Open University in 1985 and has since attained a foundation science degree, an honours BSc in chemistry and a masters in criminology - explained she enjoyed the "mix of teaching techniques, from classes and online resources to private study". Ms Briden went on to note that the experience was not as lonely as she had feared it might have been, with the amount of support offered surprising. "The online forums are fantastic and I've met some interesting fellow students," she continued.

Her comments follow those recently made by Gareth Dent, chief executive of The Open College of Arts, who predicted that rising university costs will drive an increased interest in distance learning online.
