This course, Safer Sleeping for Babies, gives up-to-date information on how to make sleeping safer for babies and gives advice on lowering the chance of SUDC (Sudden Unexpected Death in Childhood).
This safe sleep course gives a wide range of information and guidance, and is aimed at health workers, nursery workers, and those working with babies and new parents.
A wide range of topics are covered throughout this SIDs training, including:
- The definitions of SUDI, SIDS and SUDC and how they differ
- Tackling unexplained deaths, and reducing their number
- The agencies and individuals who can help reduce the risk
- The triple risk model
- Descriptions of environmental risks and how to avoid or reduce them

- How to regulate babies’ temperature

The safe sleep training course also covers up-to-date statistics, facts and figures to help learners understand the current levels of (SIDS).
It provides links to organisations that can provide information and help, such as the Lullaby Trust, the Baby Sleep Information Service, and the NHS. This course contains challenges for learners to check their understanding as the course proceeds.

Course Structure
Safer sleeping is a way to prevent unexplained deaths in infants. The opening part of the course looks at what SUDI, SIDS and SUDC are, facts and figures around unexplaining infant deaths, what has happened to reduce the number of these deaths, what you can do to reduce the risks, the different parts of the triple risk model, who the child death overview panel are and what role they play and it includes several interactive challenges along the way to check your knowledge.

Frequently Asked Questions
The NHS states that you should place your baby on their back to sleep, in the same room as you, for the first 6 months. Keep your baby's head uncovered – their blanket should be tucked in no higher than their shoulders. If wearing your baby in a sling or carrier, do not cover their head with the sling material or with a muslin. Read more here.
