Description
This course has been updated to comply with and include changes from Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE) 2026 and Working Together to Safeguard Children (WTSC) 2026 legislation. This legislation came into force on 1st September 2026 and was published by the Department for Education.
Anyone working in education has a responsibility to help safeguard children from abuse and neglect. Staff need to recognise the signs, understand their own role, and know how to report a concern to the right person.
This course has been fully updated to reflect Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE) 2026, which now requires every member of staff, not just those working directly with children, to cover Part one of the guidance in full. It covers the four categories of abuse, specific safeguarding issues staff must know about including FGM mandatory reporting duty, serious violence, bullying, exploitation and the non-consensual sharing of images, including AI-generated images and deepfakes, and child-on-child abuse, including a clear instruction never to dismiss harmful behaviour as “banter.”
The course also covers how to respond to a disclosure, spotting the indicators of abuse and overlapping safeguarding issues, how multi-agency systems such as MASH, MARAC and Operation Encompass work together to protect children. It also covers practical guidance on record keeping and information sharing, including when data protection law does not stand in the way of a safeguarding referral.
To fully comply with KCSIE Part one guidance, this course should be completed alongside “Online Safety & Digital Safeguarding”.
It's a statutory requirement for anyone working with children to have up-to-date knowledge of safeguarding policies, legislation and guidance, so they can act on any concern about a child's safety or welfare. The course is written using practical, real-life scenarios, and is built to work alongside your school's own child protection policy rather than replace it.

- Roles and responsibilities, including knowing your Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL)
- The four categories of abuse, neglect and exploitation
- Specific safeguarding issues, including exploitation, radicalisation, serious violence, mental health, and the sharing of nudes and semi-nudes, including AI-generated images and deepfakes
- Child-on-child abuse, and challenging “banter” framing
- Mental health and serious violence, including when and how to escalate a concern
- Early help and family help
- Handling disclosures and reporting concerns, including how multi-agency systems work together
- Record keeping and information sharing
Safeguarding in Education Course Certificate and Assessment
After completing this course, learners will be able to download and print a Virtual College certificate, which they can keep for their records.
At the end of this course, you will need to complete a test that consists of 15 multiple choice questions. Learners are required to achieve a 75% pass mark, and - if necessary - may attempt the test six times at no extra cost. If learners do not achieve the 75% pass mark, further attempts may be given by contacting our support team.
Duration
This course takes around 1-2 hours to complete. As it's all online, you can complete it at your own pace, in stages, with your progress recorded throughout and as long as you like spent on each section.

Course Structure
Staff working with children are advised to maintain an attitude of ‘it could happen here’ where safeguarding is concerned. When concerned about the welfare of a child, staff should always act in the best interests of the child. This section explains where the guidance applies to, what it covers, how safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children is defined in the guidance, who is responsible, the importance of training and awareness, the different forms of abuse, what looked-after children (LAC) are and how that happens, the importance of early help and the early help assessment, staff behaviour policies and positive role models.

Frequently Asked Questions
Different training providers produce slightly different safeguarding courses at each level, which means that there’s no standardised guidance on how often you need to receive refresher training for safeguarding. The general guidance is that training should be refreshed every 2 years, but as a practitioner, you may need to undertake more frequent or specialised training to be able to fulfil the requirements of your role.
