This course gives an overview of information and guidance needed for those who work or care for individuals in this situation.
This wide-ranging course covers the definitions, needs and laws relating to individuals with learning difficulties and disabilities, including legislation, communication and partnership.
This SEND training course covers the following:
- Define special educational needs and disability (SEND) including the medical and social models
- Identify barriers and challenges to wellbeing experienced by children and young people with SEND and their families
- Explain the importance of working together with the child or young person, their family and carers and other practitioners
- Explain how to safeguard children with SEND
- Explain how to promote the independence of individuals living with learning disabilities
- Outline the legislation and strategies currently in place to promote improvements in wellbeing for those with SEND
- Understand how to communicate effectively with individuals with learning disabilities
- Identify support organisations specifically aimed at supporting individuals with learning disabilities
The course includes a range of scenarios to enable to learner to reflect on their own practice and engage in their learning; it also includes knowledge check challenges throughout.
This Working with Children with Disabilities online course has been designed for those who work with children in any setting.
Who is this SEND training course for?
This Working with Individuals with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) training course has been designed for anyone working with individuals of all ages in that situation in any setting.
This training looks at the particular considerations with regard to safeguarding and care of individuals.
Testing and certification
At the end of our SEND e-learning course, there is a test consisting of 15 multiple choice questions, for which a pass mark of at least 75% is required.
Learners can have as many as six attempts at the test at no extra cost, and further tries can be arranged by contacting the Virtual College team.
After achieving a pass mark of 80%, learners will be able to download and print a Virtual College certificate for their records.
Course duration
The SEND training course should take four to five hours to complete, but this depends on how quickly each individual absorbs the study material.
Progress is recorded and automatically saved throughout by the Virtual College Learning Management System, meaning learners can take as long as they need to complete the special educational needs and disabilities training.

SEND stands for Special Educational Needs and Disabilities. The course starts by explaining what SEND is, the different types of SEND, what learning difficulties are, the different severity of learning disabilities, the different types of learning disabilities, autism verses learning disabilities, what may cause a learning disability, the definition of disability, how opinions and attitudes influence how disabled individuals are treated, two models of disability, social construction of disability, the medical model and there's interactive challenges along the way to check your understanding.
