Course Description

Refresh your renting knowledge as to why it is important and how to become a good tenant with this 1-2 hour online course.

Learn how to be a good neighbour and explore the basics surrounding managing your finances successfully. Gain practical skills surrounding basic DIY including how to change a fuse, bleed radiators and how fuse boxes work amongst many more helpful tips and tricks. In addition, discover basic health and safety information including where dangers can arise and how to prevent common problems in your home.

Introduction to Being a Good Tenant

• What the course covers

Managing Your Finances

• Understand the importance of a basic bank account and the benefit of credit unions
• Identify the different ways to pay your rent and the advantages of direct debit
• Understand what benefits you may be able to claim to help towards your rent
• Appreciate the importance of managing your finances, avoiding debts and what to do if you struggle to pay the rent.

Being a Good Neighbour

• Why being a good neighbour matters
• How to avoid falling out with your neighbours
• Why good neighbour agreements can help communities
• What landlords consider to be antisocial behaviour
• What landlords do about ASB
• What happens with serious cases of ASB

Basic Health and Safety

• Where dangers can arise in your home
• Steps you can take to avoid accidents and injury
• How to protect yourself and your home
• How to prevent common problems in your home.

Basic DIY

• Assemble a basic toolkit
• Fit light bulbs and identify appropriate wattage
• How fuse boxes work, what a tripped fuse means and test appliances to identify faulty items
• Turn off stop cock to prevent flooding
• Explain how a boiler works
• Bleed radiators
• Hang a picture and check for pipes and asbestos behind walls
• Unblock toilets, sinks and showers

The content of this course has been independently certified as conforming to universally accepted Continuous Professional Development (CPD) guidelines.

Certification

On completion of this course, you will be able to print a Virtual College certificate.

Duration

1-2 study hours to complete. The length of time taken depends entirely on how quickly learners can study and absorb the material.
